It is a flat pre-tensioned strip of spring material shaped into coils of nearly constant radius around itself or on a drum. When the strip is extended, the intrinsic stress resists the loading force in the same way as a common extension spring, but at an almost constant rate. When the outer end of the spring is attached to another spool and originally wound, a constant torque is obtained that causes it to travel in the opposite or the same direction.
